An Overview of Allergies

Worldwide, allergies are one of the most common chronic conditions. Symptoms range from simply making you feel miserable to dangerous life-threatening reactions.

An allergic reaction begins in the body’s immune system. The system is designed to protect our bodies from invading organisms that can cause illness. An allergy is when your immune system overreacts and mistakes a normally harmless element as an invader.

In this overreaction, the body’s immune system produces Immunoglogulin E (IgE) antibodies that travel to cells that release histamine and other chemicals. This is commonly referred to as an allergic reaction.

 

Symptoms

Allergic reactions typically appear as symptoms in the lungs, throat, nose, sinuses, ears, on the skin or lining of the stomach.

Allergies may also trigger symptoms of asthma for some people. In the most serious cases, allergies can cause a life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis (an-a-fi-LAK-sis).
