[VIDEO] Dr Rabinowitz on Chronic Nasal Congestion in Cumming, GA

A common problem that comes to us (in our practice) is chronic nasal congestion. This, for somebody who has hay fever or allergic rhinitis, can be the number one symptom. The nasal congestion might also be due to a nasal obstruction, possibly due to a deviated septum, or the presence of nasal polyps. Also, we may find that patients, after allergy testing, do NOT have the presence of allergy to dust mites, pollen, mold, or animal dander… but that they actually have basal motor non-allergic rhinitis, where allergy has nothing to do with their chronic congestion. Now that becomes important, because if allergies are NOT present, an oral antihistamine is not going to be effective.

So, we put together the physical exam, where we look carefully up the nose to see if there is evidence of obstruction, with allergy testing to see if allergies are present.

If allergies ARE present, patients may respond to avoidance and medications, but if not, or if they’re tired of having their allergy symptoms for many years, we put them on allergy immunotherapy (allergy shots) to bring their symptoms under control.
