Eczema Treatment
The allergists at Allergy & Asthma Consultants will diagnose your eczema and prescribe the necessary treatments to ease your symptoms and identify its cause. Same day appointments are available at our four allergy clinics in Sandy Springs, Roswell, Duluth and Cumming, Georgia.
Eczema appears as rough and inflamed patches of skin eventually leading to blisters that cause itching and bleeding. Eczema is triggered by an immune system overreaction to irritants or allergens within your environment.
Your immune system assumes that the irritants are foreign invaders, like bacteria or viruses, that can harm your body. Your immune system’s defense creates inflammation. That inflammation causes eczema on your skin.
Eczema is usually located on the cheeks, elbows and knees in young children. In older children and adult, eczema is typically on the arms, hands, feet and the back of knees.
Eczema Symptoms
- Severe itching
- Redness
- Oozing
- Flaky, crusty and scaly skin
- Blisters
If you have light skin, the eczema rash will be red, pink or purple. If you have darker skin, the rash will be purple, brown or gray.
Unlike other skin rashes, eczema is not contagious. As with other allergies, avoiding the allergy trigger is the best form of treatment. To that end, we will ask you about the types of soap, detergent and skin care products you use as we attempt to identify the trigger. We may also perform an allergy skin test to help locate the trigger and prepare an appropriate treatment plan for you.
Additional potential triggers include:
- Stress
- Dry weather
- Fabrics
- Contact with an allergen
- Smoke
