When your immune system overreacts to a particular food, you may have a food allergy. Sometimes symptoms can occur when coming in contact with a tiny amount of the food.

Food Allergy Diagnosis
Food allergies are frequently diagnosed initially in young children, but may also appear in older children and adults for the first time. Food allergy can actually develop after years of safely eating a food. This will all be determined by food allergy testing.
Oral Allergy Syndrome
It’s entirely possible that you are not allergic to a food but rather pollen that is present on the food. Oral allergy syndrome affects most patients who eat raw fruits and vegetables and also suffer from pollen related conditions such as hay fever. To determine if you have OAS, we may conduct a food challenge in which we give you small amounts of the food you suspect you are allergic to and observe for any allergic reactions.
Food Allergy Symptoms
Food allergies are more common among people who already have other allergic conditions such as skin allergies like eczema or pollen allergies including hay fever. Symptoms of food allergies range and are similar to those allergies. The most severe reaction is anaphylaxis which can be life-threatening without an immediate injection of epinephrine.
- Itchy mouth
- Hives
- Wheezing
- Shortness of breath
- Coughing
- Swelling of the tongue or throat
- Difficulty swallowing
- Vomiting
- Anaphylaxis
- Tingling hands, feet or lips
Food Allergy Triggers
Nine foods account for 90 percent of all food allergies. You may be allergic to one or multiple of the following foods:
- Milk and dairy
- Eggs
- Peanuts
- Tree nuts
- Fish
- Shellfish
- Sesame
- Soy
- Wheat
Eliminating the foods which cause allergic reactions is the most effective treatment for food allergies. There are no medications that will prevent allergic reactions so it’s important to be aware of all foods that will cause a reaction and to be mindful when buying groceries that contain food proteins to which you are allergic. When eating out, always ask about the ingredients in the meals you will be consuming to ensure you can safely eat the food.
If your food allergy can cause anaphylaxis, be sure to always carry an EpiPen on your person should a severe reaction occur. At Allergy & Asthma Consultants, we have over 50 years’ experience properly diagnosing and treating food allergies. Same-day appointments are available at our allergy clinics for patients in need of immediate relief.
